What Residents Say

In Their Own Words

Dorothy MacLeod

Oakville, ON

✿ ✿ ✿

"I came for a six-week stay in October and extended twice. By December, I realized I had stopped counting the days and started simply living them. The meals are genuinely good, the garden is lovely in the morning, and I've made two friends I didn't expect."

"My daughter helped me move into the year-round suite about eight months ago. I'll be straightforward — I was skeptical. But the staff are genuinely attentive without hovering, the place feels like a neighbourhood rather than a facility, and I can see the lake from my window."

Mississauga, ON

"The Companion Suite was exactly what we needed — space that feels like ours, but with the warmth of a real community around us. William likes the morning walks and the greenhouse. I've been going to the creative programming afternoons. We're together, but we each have our own life here."

Couples' Companion Suite — December 2025

Lorraine Chioma

"I stayed for a month over the winter and went home feeling genuinely restored. The food was better than I expected — real seasonal cooking, not institutional catering. Staff remembered my name from day two. A small thing, but it mattered."

"After 42 years in my house, I was nervous about this. But Sophie walked me through everything before I moved in, and Michael organized a little welcome coffee with a few other residents. Within a week, I felt like I'd been here much longer. The community meetings are real — people actually listen."

"My mother moved into the year-round suite six months ago. What I didn't expect was how quickly she began calling it home — that word, with meaning behind it. The team keeps us updated when we ask and never makes us feel like we're outside the loop. It's a relief I didn't know I was waiting for."

Stories Worth Telling

The Situation

Eleanor, 74, had been living alone in Etobicoke since her husband passed. Her children lived across the country. She was managing, but the days had grown very quiet, and she told her family physician she wasn't sleeping well.

What Heron Cove Offered

She came for a six-week seasonal stay in January. The structured days — meals, morning walks, a weekly creative session — gave her days a shape she'd been missing. Staff were available but not overbearing. She had a room of her own and a dining room full of people.

Six Months Later

Eleanor extended her stay twice, then moved into a year-round suite. She told her daughter she'd made one genuine friend — "the kind you can sit quietly with." She said the mornings especially had changed. She looks forward to them.

"I didn't expect to like it this much. That sounds like a small thing to say. But for me, it isn't."

The Situation

Gerald and Pauline had been together for 51 years. When Gerald's mobility began requiring adjustments, the couple were told by one residence that it would be easier to place them separately. They refused.

What Heron Cove Offered

The Couples' Companion Suite gave them a genuinely shared home with an accessible bathroom and a sitting area. Pauline joined the afternoon programming enthusiastically. Gerald preferred the greenhouse and a quiet morning coffee on the lakeside bench.

The Outcome

They've been in the suite for over a year. Their daughter described the change as "visible" — both of them seem calmer, more settled. Gerald uses the word "home" about Heron Cove. That was not always his disposition.

"Nobody made us choose. That mattered more than anything else." — Pauline
